7 Hyperpop Chord Progressions (Free MIDI + Piano Demos)

A useful hyperpop chord progression gives you an emotional starting point and enough room to shape the sound. The examples below range from familiar minor-key loops to extended chords and changes outside the key. No single progression makes a track hyperpop by itself: your melody, rhythm, sound design and arrangement matter too.

All demos use Ableton’s Grand Piano at 120 BPM, so you can compare the harmony before choosing your own synth sound.

1. A familiar loop with brighter upper notes

Am → Fadd9 → Cadd9 → Gadd9

Start here if you want a direct four-chord foundation. In A minor, the roots follow i–VI–III–VII: A, F, C and G. Each chord lasts one bar, and the four-bar phrase repeats once in the MIDI file.

The added ninths give the familiar shape extra colour. Fadd9 contains F, A, C and G; Cadd9 adds D to a C major chord; Gadd9 adds A to G major. These added notes do not replace the third, so the chords keep their major character.

Try a bright pluck first. Leave the low notes clear, then use a separate bass sound if you want more weight. For a busier chorus, change the synth envelope or rhythm on a copy of the clip while keeping the original as your reference.

2. A descending bass line with a softer landing

Am9 → G → Fadd9 → C

This loop moves down from A to G to F before landing on C. The Am9 voicing contains A, B, C and G, with the fifth omitted. That B adds a close, tense colour against C. The F chord also contains G, so the actual voicing is Fadd9 even though the source filename calls it F.

The upper G connects all four chords. Listen for how a repeated top note can hold a phrase together while the bass changes underneath it.

Try a soft digital key or a short, glassy synth. Add a simple vocal or lead melody above the chords, and keep that melody sparse enough for the upper-note tension to remain audible.

3. Two chords, with the change arriving early

Am9 → Fmaj9

You do not need four different chords to create movement. This example alternates Am9 and Fmaj9, with shared notes connecting the two voicings.

The useful detail is the timing: the first Fmaj9 starts at beat 4-and of bar 1, half a beat before bar 2. The same anticipation repeats in bars 3, 5 and 7. That small shift makes the change lean forward without adding another chord.

This MIDI is taken directly from the Hyperpop MIDI Pack, including those early changes. Try a sustained synth that makes the overlap in harmonic colour easy to hear. Avoid quantising the chord starts to whole bars if you want to preserve the original feel.

4. A stronger pull into A minor

Fmaj9 → E7 → Am9 → C7

This is the strongest tension-and-release example in the selection. E7 contains E, G♯, B and D. The G♯ sits just below A and gives the move into Am9 a clear pull. C7 then introduces B♭ before the loop returns to Fmaj9.

The source filename abbreviates the second chord as E; the MIDI includes D, which makes it E7. The label here follows the actual notes.

Try a sharper synth sound for the E7, then let the Am9 breathe. You can emphasise the arrival with a bass change or a brief drum gap without making the chord progression more complicated.

5. An unexpected F♯ over the G chord

Am9 → Fmaj9 → Gmaj9 → Gmaj9

The first two chords suggest an A-minor setting, but Gmaj9 introduces F♯. That note is outside A natural minor and gives the G chord a different colour from the more familiar G or G7.

The Gmaj9 is also retriggered at beat 3 of bar 4, after a longer hold. The second half of the file repeats the same shape. Keep that retrigger when trying a pluck: its attack can become part of the groove.

Try a clear, lightly detuned synth before adding heavy distortion. If a melody clashes with the Gmaj9, check whether it is sustaining F natural against the chord’s F♯.

6. A major-key loop with a borrowed chord

Fmaj9 → A♭maj9 → B♭6/9 → F6/9

This loop starts on Fmaj9, moves to A♭maj9, then returns through B♭6/9 to F6/9. A♭ brings in notes from outside F major, while the shared upper G helps connect the changes.

The B♭ voicing contains both G and C, giving it a sixth and ninth. The final F chord contains D and G for the same extensions. Those details are why the labels here are more specific than the original filename.

Try this when you want a brighter opening followed by an unexpected turn. Keep the sound fairly simple while writing a melody; the harmony already supplies plenty of contrast.

7. Suspended space and a sideways ending

Cadd9 → Fsus2 → Cadd9 → E♭maj7

The Fsus2 contains F, G and C, with no third. That leaves its major-or-minor character open. The surrounding C chords include E as well as D, making them Cadd9 rather than pure Csus2 voicings.

E♭maj7 provides the final change of colour before the loop returns to C. Its notes are E♭, G, B♭ and D. G and D connect it to the preceding Cadd9, even though the root moves outside C major.

Try a wide pad or a bell-like patch with a short delay. Leave some space after the E♭maj7 so the return to C feels like the beginning of a new phrase.

How to use these MIDI files

  1. Download and unzip the seven-example folder.
  2. Drag a MIDI file onto a MIDI or instrument track in your DAW.
  3. Load a synth or another software instrument. MIDI contains performance instructions, not recorded sound.
  4. Loop the clip and try a few contrasting presets before editing the notes.
  5. Save a copy before changing the voicing or rhythm, so you can compare it with the original.

Start with a sound that lets you hear every note. Once the harmony works, try a shorter envelope, distortion, pitch effects or a different rhythmic pattern. If the low end gets crowded, separate the bass part from the chord sound on a copy of the MIDI.

What do add9, maj9 and sus2 mean?

Add9 means a triad with an added ninth and no required seventh. Cadd9 contains C, E, G and D. Maj9 includes the major seventh as well: Cmaj9 contains C, E, G, B and D. Minor 9 uses a minor third and minor seventh: Am9 is built from A, C, E, G and B, although a voicing can omit the fifth.

Sus2 replaces the third with the second. Csus2 contains C, D and G. Once E is present too, Cadd9 is a more accurate label. 6/9 adds the sixth and ninth to a major triad: F6/9 contains F, A, C, D and G.
