Reggaeton is a genre of Latin music that blends the influences of Jamaican music genres such as reggae and dancehall, with Latin American genres such as bomba and plena.

Additionally, influences from Hip-Hop are apparent as many Reggaeton songs feature rapping. Some reggaeton artist have even included electric and acoustic guitar although it was not commonly at one point possible. 

Reggaeton is extremely popular among Hispanic youths, especially in Panama and Puerto Rico.

The influence of Reggaeton has spread throughout Latino communities in the United States and can be heard in clubs across the country.

Although Reggaeton takes inspiration from Jamaican dancehall and Hip-Hop, it would be wrong to simply consider it a ‘Latino’ version of these genres.

Instead, the genre takes on a completely unique sound by utilizing a very specific rhythm referred to as “Dem Bow”.

In terms of sound design, Reggaeton typically uses electronically synthesized sounds. These can include keyboards, electric guitars, and other electronic instruments.

Generally, Reggaeton utilizes relatively simple chords & progressions, although there are some distinctive characteristics that set it apart from typical Western styles.

Many Latin genres tend to use major V chords when utilizing the minor scale. This chord helps to create suspense and tension.
